Firstly, Thanks to this forum and especially to Brig and Maxi who instructed and encouraged me to try long reining. (Sadly, I can't say I really love it but I did and my horses respond well). Recently I got JB's back done again and the chiro (who is pretty brilliant and really lovely) advised me to do long reining for a while as it encourages the neck forward. Thanks to this great forum and the resident experts I could do it (and it went very well)
Secondly- my tip! well I have spent the summer trying to buy parafin to dilute and slosh on the horses to keep the flies off but it doesn't seem to be available (without additives) anywhere!!! very strange. anyway I had to resort to normal spray which is priced between 17 and 19 euros (and some of them say to apply 3 times a day- who would have time for that let alone the money) . anyway I read a tip in a magazine that the italians rub baby oil on the horses dock area and sheath area and it keeps horse flies away for 2/3 days. I'm trying it and it seems to have some effect.
THirdly trouble: as i said, I had to get the new chiro out. THe last one did 3 sessions on JB in Jan. I have to say the new man in tons better (and nicer and did all the lifting rather than leaving it to me) and the horses seem to like him. he said JB had his poll completely out, his pelvis out and his back tight and things wrong with shoulders as well. so he treated him for all these and gave me excercises etc. when I rode him first after the excercises, i nearly cried, it was like riding a different horse. you can get so used to the difficulties and indeed pain, that you only really notice them when they are gone. I had 5 wonderful hacks. however, his poll was still at an angle to his neck and it worried me a bit. Yesterday, he had completely reverted, if he hadn't been so great before I wouldn't have been so devasted. I just thought of all the pain/discomfort he must be going through. I contacted that back man but it will be a while before he can come down. i was talking to my instructor and she said, he reverted very quickly and more or less, if it doesn't work the next time, i should be looking for a new horse. i kind of steered her off the subject as i very upset. she reminded me that he has not been well for 2 years and i have been getting everything done and he is quite young. She is right i know but I will never get another horse. its not only that I can't afford a third, time as well as money as I don't have land and i have a full time job. I would never sell and I have to face the fact that I don't think i will continue riding JB unless he gets better, its not fair on him. I really love riding and i would miss it so much but I love JB more. He is so sweet and kind and willing and I would rather lose my hobby and past time and favourite sport than lose him. Hopefully it won't come to this and the back man can fix him (permantently) this time. It was depressing, I always live in this hopeful bubble believing everything will improve and get better and i think she was trying to get me back to 'reality'. I just had to get this off my chest, not really looking for sympathy or advice (although it would be lovely) . His scaroid still growing happily away!
