I learnt how to lunge properly today and used side reins for the first time!
Sprite was good - and I got him tracking up and he was accepting contact etc!
Really pleased as I can now do that by myself and I think it's quite good bonding??
Side reins aren't evil are they (i've heard dodgey things about draw reins, not sure how similar they are)?

Side reins are the accepted tool for working a horse on the lunge- I do use them, not all time and not to pull the horse into shape- more when the horse is being naughty or really puts his head too high- or occasionally and very rarely too low so he trips. There are some other products on the market that help a horse do the same thing, chambons, pessoas etc. Ive never used a pessoa but hear great things about it, chambons have to be used correctly or can cause damage. If you do use side reins then dont have them tight, work the horse on both reins before putting them on and dont use them for too long, also work the horse to cool down without them.

Yeah I have been told to do that. I was told they are to imitate rein contact. So it's up to him if he accepts the contact but more comfy for him if he does I think??

I dont accept that side reins immitate rein contact but thats what it says in all the equestrain blurb. How can an item that fastens where it does on the saddle immitate reins unless we all ride like monkeys with our hands down the horses shoulder! One technique I use to help a horse to become round and supple in its back IS to ride like a monkey and thats why side reins are used to bring a horses head in, because they are in the low wide position. But the lungeing needs to be done correctly, pushing te horse into the contact- for them to benefit.

haha thats quite ok haffy - where did you get that from!!??
I see what your saying Brig, and I can tell when I'm lunging correctly (pushing into the contact) as he tracks up and looks much more relax - not to mention beautiful!!!
We need to work on his suppleness alot first as he tends to really push out through his shoulder on circles so that definately doesn't help when lungeing!!
I am going to post a video of my lesson the other day soon. When I can find the camera lead! So you can see what I mean then!
