I'm a HUGE fan of Greyhounds. You get a nice big dog, but one that is easy to train and sleeps most of the day. As long as they get bounteous amounts of cuddles, they're perfectly happy

I cannot say much about GSD as I have never owned one but I was bitten by one as a child and I also knew a lovely one called Boey who use to put his paws on my shoulders and knock me down then lick me to death...he was nice! I have had quite a few dogs (staffie, springer, labs, now rhodesian Ridgeback) From experience I cannot recommend a lab more as a first dog - very trainable, loyal and great fun. The only other thing I can add is that big dogs do bring with them their own issues and have to be very well trained as their size can scare people and they are stronger...Fletch our rhodesion Ridgeback had been a learning curve for me (and I have trained lots of dogs, including helping people with difficult dogs). he is very obedient now but I know there are homes full of rescue ridgebacks that belonged to people who did not have the experience of training necessary. We are getting a rescus dog soon so he has a friend but we have to be careful with the choice... Whatever you get, go to classes with it definately.. here is my big oaf

Ceej, how is he now? I seem to remember he was not allowed to jump about at one point.
