has anyone else got a horse that gets jealous when you go near other horses? i have never known it before until i got Dazzle. He hates me going near other horses and charges at them, bites them and then nips me and moves me out of the way. Today, i went into the field to bring the horses in, Emir came running over so i thought i would get him in first. BIG MISTAKE!! Dazzle came running over put his head down and rammed me out of the way of Emir. i went flying into Emir and then he started having a go at Dazzle. i am a bit sore tonight to say the least.

AJ really doesn't like it if he can see me but i'm not with him. He will constantly "talk" and try and get my attention, if I go into another horse's field he will run up and down the fence shouting at me. Not sure he will be like now he's sharing a field as haven't been in a situation but think similar things could happen. Hope you're soreness improves quickly Zx

Oops, Gems a jealous pony too, she'll pull funny faces til i go back to her, sometimes yawn too. Shes not that bad though, she knows when its time to step back thankfully - i have 3 horses inc her, i cant risk any of mine getting injured or me being unable to drag one or two out.

HI it sounds as if he has you a bit lower down the pecking order than you would probably want to be- one of the 'natural horse people ' may have a tried and tested solution to this. I think I would try and re-establish my authority by mimicking a horses language- in this case I think when he tries this you need to make yourself big and strong in his eyes, put your full body between him and the horse he is trying to scare off and make a growling 'no' noise, then be prepared if this doesnt work to punch him on the neck, just a short jab- mimicking the closed teeth punch that dominant horses use with other horses. I know this sounds like hitting him, but it isnt, you need to get a message across in a language he understands and they do understand this- thats why some horse dont like being patted. If this is really a bit much then abandon horse language and go for a gun.....a water pistol to be precise......... he wont understand what the hell you are doing but its pretty effective and after all your safety is important!
It will be interesting to hear what other people would do in these circumstances as well, I was advised the closed teeth punch some years ago but its not for all horses as some have been beaten so no longer understand the difference between a reprimand and being hit!

Utterly agree with Brig's advice. This behaviour is unacceptable. you could be badly hurt if there is a barney going on between the two and anyway Dazzle is not accepting your authority which may have all sort of knock-on effects. And the punch thing is good. If you watch horses interact it is fascinating to see how they settle pecking order disputes etc. We've been moving horses/ponies around recently and quite often an uppity youngster is told off quite sternly by the boss horse. There is a world of difference between beating a horse and teaching it manners!

Chompy, used to pull faces every time I went to see another horse, he would flick his ears at me and wrinkle his nose, it was all quite subtle but you could tell he wasn't pleased.

I also have problems with my horse but not quite so severe - He is jealous and would bully the other away from me, but I've never been in any danger - if anything he seems to direct it away from me (possibly just by chance). Good advice given to you by the others - I will use this in the future.

thanks for the advice. i was ready to try them today and i have just been up to the field and purposely went over to Emir and stood with him and Dazzle wasnt even bothered today! i went over to him and talked to him and then went back to Emir and he was ok.
He is a bit funny around the yard when he knows i am there but cant see me. my farrier hates me being there as he wont settle until i am in his eye contact.

My Murph can be like this at times. Some days he will try and see Harry off if Harry comes near me even if he dosen't want attention himself....grumpy little sod!
Saying that I can usually give Harry attention as long as It's shared and for eg I have groomed Murph first etc, I think he just likes to make it known he's no 1

Fire is like this too. He will chase Luna and Lady away and try and nip the backs of Tiggys legs if i wanna do anythin with them. Then he just stands there and looks at me with his big brown ands and pricked ears as if to say "I knew you wanted to see me really". If i take Tiggs out and do somethin with him where he can see he stands there and stares at us. totally offended. what a drama queen.

Sound advice, don't let yr horse decide what you are or aren't allowed to do with others! Dems can't stand waiting for me. When I am in the yard, she knows immediately and makes faces, revolting really, to attract my attention. Ridiculous. But when she is out of her box, she couldn't care less!
