OK so whilst I was off I decided to try and teach Doof some tricks. We managed a 'please' with the front legs but rather than picking them up normally (as if you were picking out a hoof) she lifts her leg forwards. Anyway tonight I was giving her carrots - wasn't asking her to say please and was standing in front of her - well you can picture the rest. God did I swear! Have a lurvely bruise coming. That'll teach me for trying to train her to do silly things lol '*wonders*''How do you untrain a horse to stop doing tricks.......''

I'd like to teach Hunter and Jazz to bow down on one knee so that I can always get on.

Maybe ten years ago, my daughter taught Dems to get down on one knee with her head down, very elegant. Each time, she would get a piece of apple. Every now and again, she suddenly remembers it and does it to me, although it was so long ago.

ha ha...sorry...I had to stop Murph doing this for same reason. It seems like such a good idea at time and is cute at first......she will give up eventually when it gets her no where....murph will still do it if you ask but I only do it on odd occasions or he begs constantly.
I tried to teach him to bow but he wasn't happy about the kneeling bit...might give it another go. I think harry would do a head stand if he thought he'd get a sweet out of it.

hmm yeah I didn't think about how useful it could be - If my OH ever really annoys me I could just ask him to 'go give Doof a carrot!!' Anyone know how to teach them to go down to bow. She will lower her head into her chest but thats about it.

I used treats and held them initially between front legs 9standing by girth) until he lowered head for them and then moved them back until he was reaching between legs for them but he wouldn't bend one knee he just sort of buckled on tippy toes with other leg stretched out in front.

That is exactly what we did; and Dems obviously thought it was easier kneeling with one leg stretched out in front. But remember they have a very good memory and it's a bit of a bore when yr horse keeps doing it whenever you are trying to pick her foot and then refuses to get up again until she has got her treat!
