I think i am having one of those panicky days today (sorry) Bernie has hoof rings on all four feet!!!!! really obvious ones too. my ep pointed them out last trim and said to keep any eye on them. for some reason today they really jumped out at me. they start about half way down the hoof wall and from there up the wall is uneven. I'll try get pics every site if find relating to hoof rings say basically "ahhhh your horse has laminitis" btu bern is sound and i can't rind a digital pulse on him?? are there any other causes? I haven't chaged his diet at all, unless that is the problem and he heeds more of something? omg waffleing, i'm just feeling like a crap owner right now

i know i'm not crap (haha check my big head) but i'm just having one of those days and i didn't think too seriously about the hoof rings before. maybe he has had mild lami and just not shown it (he never makes a fuss) or has and i haven't noticed

i think they are the same things, more than one ring indicates sines of trama apparently.
one ring could be to do with the change in weather affecting the grass (which we have had a lot of recently)
this is what i have got the gist of from the sites i've looked at

Becca my understanding is that the hoof grows at different rates depending on the grass i.e in spring the hoof grows more quickly than in winter, as the hoof can take a year to grow down the hoof rings reflect the changes in diet over the previous months. I think unless it is extreme it's nothing to worry about.

it was only really noticable this time last month but that could be because i clipped him? and since then the new growth isn't smooth either hence my worry.
it's more that he may have been in pain and i didn't notice that upsets me because i know i can't change the 6month old rings
cheers though everyone

Becca Stop panicking- with the weather we have been having all the farriers are saying they are seeing extreme things with horses hoofs- mad growth, splitting, hardness etc etc. Our climate seems to be getting milder and the grass is lush so its bound to affect hoof growth- then we get a heatwave and we hav no grass- then it rains for a year and we have swamps. Traditional thinking on stuff like this is bound to change- if he seems fine he probably is so please dont get into a tizzi!!!!! brig

Recent research has shown, contrary to popular belief, that the hoof wall does not just grow from the coronary band. It also grows from the laminar. Hence the differences you see between the inner and outer walls (particularly easy on a coloured foot as the outer will have pigment and the inner won't). It still not completely understood how the two walls grow down together but the belief is that the outer wall grows down and the inner wall grows out and down. When you get growth rings they are a sign that something has happened to slow down the production of inner wall. The outer wall keep producing tubles at the same rate so they back up on themselves forming a bulge/growth ring. There are many reasons why this can happen - diet, drugs, trauma (emotional & physical), illnes, fever etc, etc, etc. So, don't worry!! It could have been something that you had no control over at all. Don't feel bad about missing something, there may have been no outward signs that something was wrong.

Now here is something of a mystery When I started using HP on Basils inherited and rather persistant thrush some of it spilled and bleached a bit of the hair on his heel, just a lighter shade of brown! That area of hair has now grown upwards and extends over his pastern and fetlock at the rear and is twice the size it was- how bizarre is that? ?? Another mystery is how my bank balance diminishes every month but I feat this mystery is easier to solve!

becca - I'm a DAEP. The main difference is that I still undertake CPD with the Institute that I qualified with. As far as an owner is concerned we are virtually the same thing as an EP. There have been many posts on various forums covering the reasons for the UK Association split. But your EP is the best person to talk to about your horse's feet as they will be able to actually see them! The one thing that all EPs and DAEPs have in common is that they will talk about feet for hours on end. We love it when a client wants to know what and why as they are the ones who have the power to change things.
