I knew a grey pony with a large melonoma between her back legs she was 14 and it started at the age of about 7, when I knew her it hadn't grown in years and didn't bother her, the vet checked it every year, it was just a bit unsightly.

Hi Zara I believe they are all different and affect each animal differently depending on where they are. sounds strange having them in the mouth. but I suppost as long as they dont interfere/grow or cause pain its not too drastic. I think they should think about a hackamore just in case, provided the horse is still comfortable being ridden. I believe they are more prevalent in greys though why that is Im not sure. Maybe something about the pigment in the skin? ? brig

His owner has tried him in a bitless bridel tonite and he was fine. Apparently the lab has said that it is an unusual caseas it is in his mouth and the skin is not black. The "lumps" all seem to have appeared quite quickly which I'm a bit concerned about but the horse seems fine, we'll just have to wait and see, thanks for advice Zx

Hi Mae, I'd appreciate the website about GTE please. Vet mentioned something about a drug used for people with stomach ulcers so that would be cimetidine - thanks for that, v interesting Zx

They are common here, because of the sun. Greys tend to be at risk, especially if they have a bit of pink skin somewhere as they can get sunburned just like us. I put sun cream on Paco's pink nose. Under the dock is the most common place but I've seen them in the mouth too. We had a Camargue pony who had them everywhere and she was ridden in a hackamore to avoid the ones in her mouth. When others appeared around her girth we retired her, but she was getting on by then anyway.
