Ok ..Lets go.. Its now been 5 weeks since my surgery and I really want to get back on my sexy boy next week... BUT.. He has had 3 months lazing about. All I want to do is tack him up, get on him and ride him 20 yrds down to the farm where hubby will be waiting for me. Sounds simply, but I'm terrified.. PLEASE HELP.. lUCx

Hi Lucinda, I know what it's like to be scared and you are not alone as many posts on here are about nerves and loss of confidence. Is there somewhere safe for you to get on your horse? A paddock or a school? If there is I would get on in there and just walk about for a while I would also suggest having someone with you for moral support, safety and encouragement. Could your hubby come up and walk with you? Take your time and set yourself small, aceivable goals, good luck Zx

AS above really Lucinda- I think Zara seems to have come a long way with her nerves and has won the battle so is probably the forum expert on this. Good luck and let us know how it goes! brig

You could also lunge him for a few mins before so if he does decide to be silly he will get it out of his system while on the lunge!

if he hasnt been out for 3 months then bringing hi back into work is going to be taking time so could you get someone else to start his walk work and you get on after the first few weeks when he has got any tickle out his toes but is still in walk work?
otherwise gotta bite the bullet and think what a buzz it will be when you come here to tell us all how good it was like Zara and Racaille have done.

All I can say is good luck as I can't better the advice given. But looking forward to hearing from you after you've done it.

Thanks guys ! Brill advice from you all as usual. I can't put it off any longer, I have the farrier coming Thurs to shoe Alfie and I will go for it. I like the idea of the school. I hav'nt got one ,but, I do have a field with high hedges that hubby could fence off in a corner. I could then use the fence to get on, I usually have to climb onto my garden wall to get on. I will keep you up to date. I have been out in the field with Alf today doing a Ragwort check, and he followed me around like a puppy dog ! I love him to bits.
Thanks again ;D Luc x

fence off that bit and lunge him in it a few times before you consider getting on so he knows waht the place is about. Tack him up every time and wear all your gear- dont go in to ride him, but get on when you are ready in whatever session that is, be it a week later, or three, and if you are not ready one day, dont beat yourself up about it, theres always next time... do one circuit on each rein and get off.....
then come and tell us all about it!
