I have finally bitten the bullet, and had Spark's shoes removed I'm putting cornucresine (sp?) on everyday. As I know you lot are experts in this matter, what else can I do to help keep his feet strong?

i put vaseline intensive care (the pink one) hand cream. i was told only the pink one was good for hooves (dont know why). it did help stop his feet cracking and it is cheap and cheerful. also, your hands get moisurised too!

My farrier trimmed basil too close the first time his shoes came off so I couldnt ride/work him for about three weeks, ive now got some boa boots which seem good for hacking. I intend to work him barefoot in the school though as I want his feet to harden with the aim of being completely barefoot eventually. Ive always had him unshod behind and theres no problem with those at all so Im hoping it will be just a period of adjustment. Hope it goes well for you. will you use a farrier or a trimmer? brig

We still use a farrier, he trims all ours up pretty cheap.
And don't worry too much his feet should be ok. Dont be scared about letting him have a walk along some roads it will help them harden!

initially work on soft ground is best but you do want to get him walking on hard flat ground (like a road) as soon as he can cope on it, will def help hardend his feet up. Hoof boots are great i have boas) and if you get the pads for inside they help to encourage the sole to thicken. As for keeping them strong i can't help, bern's feet are like stone so never tried anything Any new barefoot pics?

Thankies guys. He's never had back shoes on, so I'm thinking in theory it will be an easier step for him to make. All his feet are black so therefore naturally quite strong. My usual farrier will be trimming him, he knows the horse and his workload, so he should be a good bet. I'll have a look into the Vaseline idea, I like the double whammy ;D With regards to piccies- I'll get ;D right on to it ;D ;D
