i'm the same, love jumping my mare but it goes over 2ft and it's too big i found a really good instructor and me and savvy jumped nearly 3ft i think tha main thing is breathing, don't let yourself get absorbed by your fear and just go for it, if you ride a horse like my mare that you know is capable and willingly do it and will take you over the jumps without too much input from you everyone gets afraid from time to time, overcoming your fear is hard but well worth it good luck

I can totally relate! I feel the same that I am fine jumping wimpy little cross poles and 2 ft bars all day long..give me something bigger then I chicken out! lol I did have a prettyu bad fall with my old horse though that I think all this nervous stuff comes from! Do you have lessons at a school? If so then thats the best thing besides having your own horse to practice on. On one of my very first lessons my instructer said right at the end that I have confidence issues...straight as that! I was suprised as I was trying my hardest to keep myself but she still noticed! She helped me every step of they way! Now I have no problems jumping riding school horses, I even jumped a gate the other day! That has taken nearly a year though. Dont rush it. Have some group lessons so when you see the other riders jumping before you you will see how easy it looks and will give you more confidence! If you have your own horse then let someone you know ride and watch them jump..again you will see how easy they make it look! It all takes time. Dont push yourself too much...just one cup-hole at a time!

do you get scared thinking the horse can't do it or that you can't do it? (cos i bet both of you can really ) if it is you think you can't then stick to horses you feel safe on for now, build your confidence as you being nervous wont help a less confident horse. Don't push yourself too far, jump as high as you feel you can, then if you are having a good day maybe try for that extra hole (only if you feel you can) once you do that one extra you will get a real buzz if you think it is the horse maybe watch someone else jump it sometime if they have no problem you tell yourself see no problem s/he can do it so can i. If they do struggle look for where you think you would change things, shorter/longer rein, slower/faster approach etc. Also i hate doing it but watching a video of yourself ride you can pick up on your own habits too, things you don't even realise you are doing.

No thats not weird, when i got bernie I had really low confidence because of a horse i had on trial before him. He helped me so much because he was so so so lazy and needed totally re training, especially jumping. He would literally not pic his legs up and push the poles down. I found that because i had to concentate on teaching him and getting him moving forward the fear took a back seat.
Maybe see if there is a horse where you are that needs that extra encouragement or even reschooling to divert your nerves. Also if you have a competitive streak maybe set yourself goals to reach by a certain time and see if you can do it or even beat it eg. by 20th jul i'm going to jump X horse over a cross pole in canter, by end of aug jump a grid. what ever you feel is acheivable in that time. And always end on a positive note, its good for you and the horse

im the same - once in my lesson a few years back i used to absolutely love jumping - and instructor asked who wanted to jump more and of course i put my hand up and she put it up and i thought oh no! is she looking us to jump that big??? and so my heart wasnt in it and the pony had a springy jump and after three attempts i jumped it and fell off and i have lost my enthusiasm for jumping and my nerve - although i couldnt just do without it and do dressage and hacking all the time - i would love to do a showjumping or XC course - i know exactly how you feel!
