Ive mentioned before how my lower leg has a tendency to come too far back as a result of seeing myself in a picture in the late 90s with a forward leg and forcing it back. Well Im now trying to undo the damage but it is taking some time.
But to put this all in context I made the mistake of exchanging a couple of lessons on Welly for a friend who gave my lad some photoshop tuition. I knew she was novice, just basic canter etc but thinking Welly will have coped with all sorts on his trekking days I thought they would manage. I couldnt have been more wrong. She was very wobbly in the leg and I could see in his face he was very confused, but he kept it together and she got some nice basic trot work, but I darent let her canter. I then worried about the next sessions so much that I cancelled and eventually confessed that I thought he was too much for her and thought he might end up pinging her off........(I paid for the photshop lessons!)
So lately in my schooling sessions with him we have worked on counter canter, on the right he finds it really hard and so do I- on the left is ok. Last night I had a RC lesson where I was running through some elements of prelim tests. His canter work was coming nicely but every so often on the right rein he became 'waspy'. A the trainer said I was over-riding him and indeed I could feel my outside leg coming too far back and my inside rein opening too much which was confusing for him but whilst she was with the other client I managed a really nice one so thought I had got it sorted. I let him relax on a long rein and thought we were done. However A had other ideas so I picked him up again (much to his annoyance) and began my test.
It was all going very nicely until the right canter after X, he wasped again, I over corrected and made him wasp more so he simply lifted his right hind, dropped his left shoulder and I was a gonner! I half managed to hold on but he changed direction and headed to jump the barrier (I was on my way to the floor by then so it didnt matter) so he changed his mind and kinked left dumping me completely. I did land with a thump on my ample bum (so no harm done) and my hat saved my head as it hit the floor. He was easy to catch so I lay for a while laughing that I needed to get my breath.
We did manage a really nice one after that where I really made sure my leg was forward and my hands even. I think this horse is teaching me to ride again! I am really really glad it didnt happen to my friend!
