Out hacking Pete is becoming very set in his ways. Lovely and traffic safe and usually obedient but the first half of the ride he is painfully slow! Different on the way home. Worse of all of he isn't leading the ride. Any suggestions besides a big stick!

Hmm, this rings a bell! Are you always on the same routes? It's just his way of telling you he is bored! He knows the way out - yawn - but on the way back he can't wait to get home.
PS moving this to hacking & schooling where I think you thought you were posting!!

doh .... too busy moving this to add ...
is there a possibility of changing routes? If you really can't then the only alternative to a big stick LOL that I can see would be to give him something else to think about. Perhaps ask him to do some lateral moves ?

Sounds a bit like pen! Some days she is painfully slow on the way out, it's quite frustrating but once up the lane she perks up and steps out more so i think, as Rac suggests, it's a bit of boredom as it's the only route in/out for me combined with a little nappiness/reluctance to leave the safety of home.
I think i would try and encourage him to do at least part of the ride in front when out with others, even if you do have to be a bit strong with your aids. Then make sure he is rewarded for his bravery.
Is he still slow going out following? Or do you feel, like i do with pen, it's also a very minor form of napping/protest at leaving home/his friends behind?

Thanks for suggestions. Great when he is in front just a bit more looky. Nice hack yesterday. He had a slight lameness at the weekend but seems ok now. Phew! We do stick to the same route a lot which isn't ideal. Our hacking is not very good. Hoping yard owner will take me out in her lorry a bit in the summer. Nice hacking nearby. I used a different technique suggested by my instructor of using a metronome style tap on his shoulder then behind girth to give him the rhythm I wanted. Worked quite well.

Just try to vary it where you can and he is napping even if it feels very safe so you do need to ask him to move forward at your pace.
