This will probably make you smile.......I never really say much about jumping, I used to be quite useful and would happily jump a course of testy jumps but the five year layoff I had from riding saw a much less confident return, and it wasnt just nerves although it did become nerves later.
Sometime towards the end of the nineties I saw a picture of myself riding, I remember the ride and I felt quite comfortable, but in the picture my leg was really forward and although I can never have a 'chair' seat because of the shape of my pelvis I actually looked pretty well chair like. so over the course of a few months I began to ride with my legs further back, but I obviously over-did it, because it transferred to my jumping.
I had lost the technique, I had a couple of decent lessons on Basil and during one of them had a horrendous fall, really hurt myself (nothing broken except my spirit and my helmet) and quickly my appetite for jumping ceased to the point where I would avoid it at all costs.
Then in Ireland I more or less got my confidence back and funnily enough it was whilst jumping Welly on the two jumps where I broke my finger. The reason being was when I hit him behind the saddle to make sure he jumped I was uber secure, felt like the days when I was hunting (just a shame my finger got in the way)
So now back to the present- Ive had a couple of pops on Welly, but he doesn't get low poles (...surely we just stride carefully over these Mum?) so after doing grid work with Floss and Cat two days ago I left the jumps out and decided to go over them. (One stride 60cm double) well he fell over the first pitching me out of the saddle and ran out of the second- throwing me back in the saddle, bless him!) So I got off, put them back up and had another go. This time he jumped the first, and knocked the second. So I got off and put it back up then gave myself a huge mental talking to. We then jumped them reasonably well for two times.
So it was with some anxiety that I went with Floss and Cat to the 65cm class at the riding club. I told the instructor that it had all gone wrong. Luckily we were all on green horses. So we started on a course of poles- I got the usual sit up ,sit up but all the advice was good and we all quickly progressed to higher jumps building up to a course.
The first real jump I did she watched me carefully and said- "Your leg comes back- I want you to think you are pushing your leg forward as you come into the jump" So I did and there it was- I had it, that feeling where you make the smallest change and it does it for you. Well that was it- Welly suddenly realised I was back in the driving seat and we got the only clear of the night. Gosh was I happy.
The lovely Floss continues to impress, despite an unlucky first pole in her round she jumped lovely and was a pleasure to watch. I have a video of her which I will edit in later. No video of me, as Ive avoided jumping videos like the plague- shame really as I might have seen what was going on...ho hum!
