I am a bit of a dinosaur and still have a tiny old steam-driven mobile phone. I keep it because it fits in my jodhpur pocket, won't break my hip if I fall on it and I won't cry when I drop it and Paco stands on it. But my provider has changed all its pay-as-you-go tariffs and I am now forced to pay the same as a contract so I am wondering whether the time is right to join the twenty-first century But I am worried about having a large, expensive phone when out solo hacking - which, let's face it, is when you really need a phone. So what do you do? Do you keep a tiny phone for riding or risk taking your smart phone?

I have an ancient nokia, it makes calls and texts, battery lasts forever and i've not succeeded in killing it yet (and i've tried pretty hard!). Lost count of the times i've dropped it whilst riding and it's been in the trough before too, my Oh keeps going about me having a fancy phone but at the rate he kills them too at work it's not worth the hassle of an expensive one personally.

I worried too about changing from cheap and cheerful to a decent phone. Touch wood I have been fine with an iPhone. I did but a nice sturdy cover for it. Still fits in Jodhs pocket- just! Great for nice photos out hacking. Only problem I have is reception.

Seeing the text would be a serious advantage for me too Brig On the other hand, all I need a riding phone for is emergencies. Think I'll keep my dumb-phone for that.

I have an iPhone 5s which I love. The bigger iPhones and samsungs just seem to big to fit in a pocket. Once you go to a smartphone you'll never want to go back though. And these days they have excellent cameras for taking photos of your horse
