Ashamed to say that I lost my rag with Paco during our last lesson - but to be fair, he threw all his toys out first He just wasn't listening to me at all. When a car pulled into the field next to us he shot off and then was just silly and spooky, over anticipating and when he didn't want to work he just put his head in the air and bounced on his front end. I was asking something difficult for him: shoulder in NOT on the piste and then canter transition into a 12m circle, but he did it very well the first couple of times and then got bored and naughty. It's not often I lose my temper with him but I did. Not pretty. So today it was sunny and warm and I was on my own so I thought I'd try to right the wrongs of Friday. I spent a lot of time in walk just bending him and getting him to concentrate on me, then some varied trot work, again making him think about what I was asking. I managed to get into a bubble of concentration and really thought about my legs, hands and seat. It worked marvellously! So pleased with him that at the end I had a go at what I remember from my dressage test and it was great - I was especially happy with his left canter which was lovely and when I had to give with my inside hand he stayed with me. If he can do that in a real test and I can ride as calmly again we might just nail it!

Naughty boy, you need to bottle whatever it was that you had at home!
Was your lesson at the club? Do you think it's excitement/tension/nerves (combo of possibly both of you) that cause his little outbursts?

Off days happen. Even the best horses have them. I know Harriet can really push my buttons and it's so hard not to lose my temper. Funny thing is I think she knows when she has gone too far as she will try to make it right.

Funny thing is I think she knows when she has gone too far as she will try to make it right. They sure do! It was Sam's turn to be antsy today: the T put Sam's fleece down beside the arena and let him look at it ... but he still threw a fit every time he passed it. Paco was very good again and worked really hard at some proper counter canter. This is terribly hard for him on various levels: he's not always well balanced in canter, I have to help him a lot, and he's only fairly recently decided that he CAN strike off left without his leg falling off. Now I'm asking him NOT to lead left when going left! Haff, I am very lucky and my coach comes to me for my weekly lesson so Paco has no excuse for spooking although he he HATES things that are 'not right', ie something that is not supposed to be there like the car in the field!

I just cant believe that of Saint Sam............ Left counter canter will be really really good for Paco and really, if the exercise is introduced as an extension of true canter right it shouldn't confuse his walnut brain as they are separate questions, but there is always the exception!
Was just introducing counter canter to Harriet when her brain exploded so we arent quite there again yet, but think it will be a fab exercise for Welly once I get going on him again. Think its around three/four weeks since I rode due to weather and holidays etc. Seems ages ago.

I think we all know that feeling! Sometimes I do think they need a reminder that they need to work on our terms, not just on theirs. Oof course pure temper is never useful...but none of us are professional riders and frustrations of day to day life easily bubble through to our riding (or to mine at least, I'm just hoping that other amateurs have the same issue occasionally ). I'm sure Paco won't have held it against you!

if only we could point out to them that we actually ask so little out of the 24 hours they have each day! one hour of concentration against about 6 hours of our work to make them happy and comfortable (combined with the 6 hours of salary each day that pays for it)! ahh if only they knew....
