Any good ideas/tips?
I am trying to include lots of transitions and have started to trot downhill (tricky as it's actually pretty flat here) making sure her hocks are well under her and stopping/restarting if she loses it and starts to go on her forehand. Also trotting across the common as it's very rough and unlevel with small banks/dips/cracks etc to negotiate so good for making her her think whats she doing and 'checking' herself rather than me doing all the work.
In a straight line her canter isn't too bad, it's far from good but she is now more often than not going on the leg asked for now (bit exaggerated aids still and when she doesn't it's because of me 9/10 times) rather than favouring one as before. Just wondering what sort of exercises in walk/trot will help her get ready for 'circling' next year...which is at this rate when my field will be dry enough to school on!
Re Cantering, i read something in a very old book (1930/40's) about timing the ask for take off and it really works but is very tricky to judge, especially on a green horse as she doesn't always respond straight away, but i don't recall ever being taught it before? Makes perfect sense though so no idea why i've never known it before!
So if we want to canter with the left leg leading we apply the aids when the left fore and right hind are in the air as we know the horse is about to bring the right hind to the ground and will therefore be able to lead off smoothly to the left leg as we're already starting the sequence for them. Easier said than done by a long way!
