Im constantly trying to think of exercises to help Welly straighten up and come through. He carries his head to the right also (Ive had a physio check) so I need to help him use his left hind more to help his balance. After a good warm up where he gave me three consistent canter strikes to the right (his canter bogey rein) I decided to work on two 20m half circles with a change of circle over X using a half turn on the forehand. I started to the right. Once he had got the idea of the TOTF he came very engaged and light and gave me a good feel through the trot coming light in the hand and very round. He got a huge pat and rub then I repeated on the left rein. Again the trot came very light and much straighter through the contact. I then tried the transition after the TOTF to canter. amazingly he stayed round and light and really carried himself. Such a good boy and such a great exercise!

Ooh that sounds interesting. So do you do a half circle, halt, TOTF and straight off again on the other rein?

Stay on same rein pboy, so start circle at c to x and half right totf then stay right to a. Only change rein and flexion after a break. It works miracles!!

Sounds a great exercise, one for the future.
My field is too wet at the min but pen is still really struggling to canter on a circle, not helped by her evading when it gets tricky, we need to work on her balance and lightning the forehand a lot, lot more!

Haff- Ive used TOTF to lighten the forehand quite a lot. People say it puts them on the forehand and is only good for opening gates ( I expect you will have heard that) but I think it is a great gymnastic exercise as it stretches and opens the SI area so they can really use their hind end and lift the shoulder. You can practice it anywhere so once the ground dries up a bit you will have mastered the turn ready for an upwards transition afterwards.

I am sorry to be so thick but is it almost like a halt to canter transition then?
