On Welly Im trying to establish all the things he will find straightforward and fairly easy. He has lovely paces but is on the forehand so without trying to do too much to harm the fragile connection I have with him when he finds a shape Ive rediscovered the benefit of half halts. On a circle I encourage a long low trot- inconsistent but nearly there- his pace is loose and rangey then I lighten my bum and brace my back to slow the pace and then encourage him to power through again. By jove he is getting it and it is lightening the forehand. Sometimes he is a tinker and walks so I do have to carry a whip to tap him up a bit, but he is whip shy so I have to be careful and if he sees it he can banana away. I think he will be a horse that will appreciate the finesse of spurs used correctly but not for the moment until he is more established. Its nice to see him changing shape- his neck is becoming more pronounced on top. He has a nice round tummy and as his topline is improving he looks well. I mistook him for Harriet the other day and thought she had got into the wrong field.

Ha ha!
You always thought he would be a quick learner. Thanks for reminding me about half halts, I don't do them enough.

It does sound like he's doing well!
And thank you from me for the reminder too. We do a lot of transitions but I don't do nearly enough half-halts. Indio responds to them very quickly too and I do have to be careful not to end up with a downward transition, but it helps hugely with both lightening the forehand and getting him off my leg more.
