We had one of those fabulous autumn days that make you so very glad to be alive: it was warm, still and crystal clear, with the autumn tree colours glowing on the hills and the vineyards turning the reds and golds of fire.
So the T and I decided to ride to our old house for a nosey. Sam is still on time off (but getting better all the time) so she rode R who, since his mammoth osteo and dentist sessions, is a much nicer horse to have around now (but still R, so a little beggar when he wants to be).
Even my OH decided to come along on his bike. Privately, I didn't think he'd make it all the way and especially not up the extremely steep path at the last, where even the horses struggled, but he impressed me by sticking with us for the whole four hours.
The old house was looking very smart, but all closed up, and we popped in to see our dear former neighbours. Which was all lovely but the real treat was the horses. Paco was walking out really well but it was R who was the star: he was really good! He let P go in front sometimes and happily tucked in behind (this is a first, usually he'd make a fuss about not being in front) and when we cantered, although he bronced a bit at the start due to excitement, he settled down to a nice steady pace. Then he came back to walk without the usual histrionics and the jogging and head shaking that meant he wanted to continue streaking along the tracks.
We had a lovely, calm four hours. To say this about an outing with R is a first - almost a miracle. He was in a hackamore, which suits him (but unfortunately is not complet legal) and the T was riding him very quietly.
I'm jolly pleased - and it was a beautiful memory
