(Beak is my boys nick name) Took him to a session at local venue. The trainer didnt show through sickness so a regular competitor ran a fun 'have a go' session with a mini comp at the end. Dont know how he did placings wise as results not out yet, he missed out the rein back and messed up his leading in hand- but everything else was really good. Toudle broke once during the slow canter but he did the bending poles at a canter and also the canter corridor. He managed the neck reining which he learned there so was really pleased with that. Toudle decked him in the warm up- not sure what happened as it happened behind another horse so was a bit worried he might misbehave doing the session but he was rock solid. Think it may be his thing!

Just a silly baby thing Pboy, and easier to type than his name. He used to call beetles 'Beaks' so we used to call him our little Beak as he was always scurrying about- it just kind of stuck.

Well done that boy! Rein back doesn't figure in entry level comps (well, in France) so no worries that he missed it out. The neck-reining slalom is harder than it looks (trust me ) so well done Beak for nailing it, and for the canter slalom which is easy to get wrong. Maybe he has found his discipline ...?

Not sure Rac, it was only a fun comp and he came 10th out of 11, so of course being fiercely competitive he is devastated at his poor placing! I think he suffered badly for missing the rein back but not sure where he lost other points as I dont know much about it. We will go again though. He loves show jumping but whether Toudle is up to it remains to be seen, have a feeling that is where I may lose my Wellypig! He is so busy with trampolining as well so time to do everything is tricky.

It would be very interesting to see his score sheet - either the other kids were all brilliant (which seems unlikely) or he lost points for something he didn't know he was doing, such as breaking pace before he passed the exit flag at each obstacle, for instance, which is easily done.

Only just seen this one, sounds like a good day out in general. Can i pick your brain as was going to make a post about this anyhow, hence suddenly seeing this - There is an indoor Trec comp near me next month....any ideas what it will involve as i was thinking of entering pen in the starter class. I assume it's just obstacles as your describing above. I'd love to do some training days, like you are, but there is nothing anywhere near bar this comp. I also thought it was this coming week not end of Nov so it will depend on weather as trailer is still living down my field, so if it's suddenly wet we won't be able to get it out quite possibly! OH not quite ready to try reversing it up our uphill sloped narrow gated drive just yet

Well Im not speaking from experience here as never been to one. I researched basic obstacles for the distances and times online and set up some practice stuff at home similar to the stuff that was there for the first training session. The canter was timed over three quarters of the arena 20x40 but nowhere can I find the time so I assume its set on the day depending on local conditions, that said just establish canter before the off and go as slow as possible- doesn't matter if strike off is incorrect but mustnot break into trot. Then the walk is on the same bit but as fast as you can but again must not break into trot. There is a canter corridor, two poles parallel, i reduced mine to 1m but its slightly wider in the comp. There is a rein back corridor so the horse has to be straight, there are bending poles, a slalom (Square S shape narrow track to ride through and to lead through. Then a neck reining clover leaf course but this can alter. There is a small jump. I have no idea about the orienteering part so maybe look this up online. Apparently the comps are uber friendly so give it a whirl and ask advice there???

Thanks, I don't think there is any orienteering at the arena ones but i stand to be corrected as can't actually find much out about it generally, all the info is about full comps. There are woods/bridleways across the road from venue so it would be possible to have it i guess.
