Went to a local dressage competition yesterday with murphy, havent done dressage since june or any flatwork worth talking about all summer so took a notion of just going for a laid back fun day out. I was working to 8pm on the friday night so I just decided to bring him in from the field on saturday morning and do the best i could! When i went down i found him in the stream/ditch at the bottom of the field so his legs were covered in mud which was typical! Hosed them off and washed his tail and got him plaited up and brushed over - he isnt clipped yet so unfortunately couldnt do much about the colour of him, we were a bit grubbier looking than everyone else but at least he had a nice clean tail! Could hardly get the plaits in with the amount of fluff getting in the way but at least they sort of hid the shape of them!
I had entered Prelim 5 (they were using dressage ireland tests, so a new one for me) - i thought it was quite a tricky test compared to similar BD tests - heres a copy (scroll down to Preliminary section) www.dressageireland.ie/shows/dressage-ireland-tests/ the good thing about dressage ireland is that all tests are free to download.
Murphy warmed up quite well actually and felt quite forward (for him!) however i wasnt getting enough response in transitions so got fed up and give him a sharp tap with the schooling whip and he jumped forward and said ok then! So after that he was brilliant - did a few more circles and transitions and then i went in to the test. It went better than i expected, he had a good outline in trot (considering we dont really work too hard at home in the arena on that) the walk was a bit slow and lost the outline, canter lost the outline but we never really had much outline in it anyway. He was fairly forward, we didnt get any comments about lack of implusion which was good because we used to! Judge marked quite highly i thought as we got a lot of 7s and 8s - lowest marks was a 6 when i thought he was walking too slow so i kicked him on a bit much and he jogged.
Final comments were 'nice horse with good paces, need to work on developing a more consistently round outline throughout your work. accurate. well done' We got 68.4%! Main comments were about his outline and that he needed to stretch more in the bits where he was supposed to be stretching down but me and mum thought he was stretching well for murphy, but always room for improvement! We got 2nd in quite a large prelim class so i was over the moon - we had just came out for a bit of fun with no expectations. Just a super day out with a lovely relaxed and friendly atmosphere!
