With Welly. He has had his teeth done.
Ive now tried french link with cheek pieces- goes wooden
neue schule verbidend- too sharp- evades
plain eggbut snaffle- mix of wooden and evades german hollow mouth french link- best but not ideal (plus mine is a bit too small)
In Ireland he had a hollow mouth loose ring with a lozenge which seemed ok so have ordered one in his size for schooling.
However last time on hack with hounds he got strong (Im not too strong in my hands due to wrist and injury issues) so need something that provides brakes, although I was able to hold him I can imagine I would struggle on some occasions.
Given Fimacg thread Im not necessarily going to go stronger although I have a neue schule universal I could try. Im not brave enough to go bitless due to hand/wrist issues Any other suggestions?
I dont like pelhams but wouldnt rule out a double...........

How about a good old fashioned Kimblewick or a Myler with the hooks? Has he got a "fleshy" tongue? He might go better in a ported bit. Bitting can be so difficult and a minefield of conflicting advice and views. Both of mine are in Mylers and go well in them; I've heard good things about "Bomber" bits but I've never used one. Good luck x

Such a minefield, I am still not sure bitless is the most sensible thing I have ever done but works so far, let us know how it goes.

My sympathies. It can be s difficult: we tried everything with Rackers but eventually - in desperation - tried a hackamore. He goes really well in it, although he can still be an utter prat he has stopped the mouth crap at least and because a hackamore can be strong there are enough brakes for him. However, it does take a leap of faith. The T worked R a lot in the arena with the hackamore before she ventured out but there haven't been any issues.

I've ridden Debs in a Hackamore, she went nicely in it.

Could you try bitless at home? A mechanical hackamore can be pretty severe in the wrong hands so brakes shouldn't be issue if you did try one, whilst with light hands the contact/pressure can be kept minimal.
Would he like the feel of a waterford or cherry roller?

Got it sorted but thanks for input. In a loose ring with lozenge for schooling and hacking and I've got a ns universal for fast work.

You should try a 3-loop gag. My mare used to be a proper strong prat however now having this bit she goes really well schooling and hacking
