Christian isnt enjoying pony club too much. Its girl dominated and I have to say very old fashioned in its approach- not helped by the two old biddies that run and teach at it. Plus one of the old biddies doesnt like Toudle at all and I dont rate her as a trainer either. (not a good mix eh?) and the other trainer they regularly use I dont rate much either, she seems a nice person but her teaching is stuck in a rut. (They did get in a rather decent trainer recently and Ive also had a session with her and liked her approach so more on that below)
So when I heard about the le trec classes and two of my riding buddies were going anyway I went along to watch to see if it would be suitable for me and my boy to do together.(Couldnt book my boy in on that night as he was trampoline training) It was an looked rather fun.
First they worked on the timed walk and canter. The canter looked easy but no one could canter consistently for the required distance and all were too fast. (no hope for me and Welly there then!) But the walk part would have been his forte as he eats the ground at walk so still potential. Both phases would suit Toudle as he can hold his canter well and can go slow or fast, also his walk is ok.
Then it was the neck reining- again no prob for Welly and will work on that with my boy and Toudle (But think he can do it as Im very much a one hand hacker)
Next came the s bend thingy (not sure of technical term) but looked something that needed practise then would be fine. Then a rein back (work required for Toudle I think) then bending which should be ok. There was also a canter tunnel which again just needed practise. All fairly new stuff to me but looked fun.
So there was plenty to think about and work on. So Ive booked us both on the next session in October.
Then when I got home there was a message from the trainer whom I like- she has young uns herself and I guess realised there was a market for young riders doing fun stuff- she was gauging interest for a non pony club style rally- five hours at a training venue near me- to be fair its a no brainer, Ive signed him up and at £30 its a steal. Told my boy and he is delighted. Esp when I told him I would cancel pony club if we started doing stuff together and he did the young uns training also (which he can do with his pal) Fun times ahead I hope.
