temparature here plummeted yesterday, turned all of mine out with lightweights on. Welly's new one hasnt arrived but found an old one of Basils that will suffice as long as it doesnt pour it down. Will keep him clean at least. Floss had the usual melt down as it was something not expected. Im afraid I had to slap her as she was swinging around so much I would have been crushed. She then stood like a rock. She is such a funny onion, wont accept bribes to be settled but a hand slap works miraculously for me. She is deffo a mare that requires firm but fair discipline. I fear she has been hammered in the past though. Spent a few touching moments with her when I put her to bed though which is miraculous in itself as she wont normally do 'baby' contact.
I wasnt sure what to do about Basil though, he feels the cold quite easily, especially if he gets wet which he will being out, but it seems wrong to put a medium weight on so soon, I compromised and put two lightweights on, that way there is more chance of him staying dry and they will trap air between them. I decided against a cloth under rug as I havent yet found a lightweight well fitting waterproof that is totally waterproof once a horse rolls- which they are more likely to do once cold.
Some of last years rugs were a tad tight suggesting my horses are too fat! In fact Jack said he though Welly needed to lose weight, Ive been trying to get it on!!! Its more topline and muscle he needs and that has taken a backward step with the lack of work.
