Saw this interesting piece just now and it got me thinking, very slowly things [perceptions especially] are gradually starting to change in the world of high level competition horses?
Do you agree/disagree? Or is it just a fad?
Personally i think results are starting to speak for themselves in many spheres...just look at Carl Hester's horses. Although valegro is some sort of horsebot in disguise, i do fear, the results are shining through, they are happy horses trained properly and allowed to be horses, (within the constraints of being top athletes of great value of course).
They are turned out and hack out to keep them sound of mind and body, valegro's behaviour during prize givings is amazing, he's as quiet a gymkhana pony when Charlotte starts waving flags about whilst his fellow equines are ready to explode. On that note I read an interesting epona (i think) blog the other day actually about this, how there would basically be no judges left (or very different results should anyone be brave enough to cast an opinion) should we go back to the old days of dressage being about training the horses for other work, it was basically what would happen if the judges had to ride the modern day dressage winner across country!
A showjumper i like is Luca Moneta, who spurns unnecessary gadgets and instead allows his horses to run and jump so to speak, again his results speak for themselves, especially when you take into consideration he rides many horses others have given up on or have proved too 'difficult' to get a tune out of.
Lucinda McAlpine, is another who has long pioneered there is another way to do things. www.lucindamcalpine.com/
