Some things Ive noticed over the past few months
Have been enjoying some lessons with Jack, quite sporadic but enough to keep an eye on what I am doing with Harriet. She is such a lovely balanced mare that she finds most things easy with only some stiffness issue related to her weight bearing on her right hind (she is completely sound but has a preference for movements where the left hind is the dominant hind) so left strike off can be hit and miss- but only if she is in a tizz or I get my balance wrong. I am now in the situation where I can simply lean back a little to ask for the strike off, putting weight onto my outside seat bone to encourage the strike off. This is good practice for later changes....but Im getting ahead of myself. The thing Ive found really really difficult is keeping the lean back into and through the canter as I had become rather cramped and forward riding Basil.
I think this is also something to do with my own conformation (my pelvis is a little twisted making my bum stick out more- think its hereditary as my boy was asking why is own bum sticks out too and he tends to tip a bit) so I am really conscious of keeping my upper body back. I had a riding club session with another trainer last week and she confirmed the lean back approach. It certainly works with my mare. Ive stopped worrying where my legs are and this has helped and subsequently my leg has become much quieter and more balanced. I did notice on the hacking with hounds video that Ive gone back into doing a half seat trot, I find rising for long periods hard work, but on reflection I believe I may have to push through the pain barrier and just do it as the half seat encourages my tipping.
Im gutted because I feel I am getting somewhere with my riding and starting to really enjoy the thought of competing Harriet but know that its going to be interrupted soon to get my finger sorted. ho hum!
