A non-horsey friend has called me about a pony who 'can't get up' and lies about in the sun in 40C. It apparently can sit up like a dog but can't get its back legs to work. It is in a paddock with a new shelter which it 'can't get into'.
Given that the pony has a new shelter and there were two women apparently in with it the other day I doubt that it is neglected. I suspect it is old and I'll tread carefully rather than wading in. And I must stress that my pal is seriously non-horsey.
I'll go and have a look this morning.

Oh poor pony...it sounds like it's old and can't handle the heat at all I hope he's ok, good luck with the visit (and good on you for going along!).

False alarm. The pony looks very old but is obviously cared for: it was on its feet in its shelter, eating hay and wearing a fly mask, so not at all neglected. It may have had sore feet but someone is clearly caring for it. I don't regret driving over to see it though, there might have been a problem but as it turns out all is well.

There is a condition related to old age where they will appear to sit, I cant remember for the life of me what it is. I had a similar situation where I came across a very old pony, half blind and sitting like a dog. I ended up getting the RSPCA involved and the poor thing was subsequently PTS. Man who owned it cried like a baby- just couldnt let it go, but the pony was suffering. Poor thing.

Ahh poor thing...glad you went to see it x
Talking of sore feet is this an age thing? For years I thought willow had arthritis and in his new loan home they had him shod and it's like a new lease of life...just really tender feet...he flies around like a youngster now!! Is this common?

I guess if they have had lami and there is a rotation then they will always be a bit sore, plus some are disposed to it having flat feet. Quite a few get sidebone as they get older so appear a bit more pottery.
