I knew there was a reason I didn't much like donkeys.
In this very hot weather I sleep with the french windows in my bedroom open. Very early this morning, about 4am, I heard barking dogs and for a sleepy moment thought there were some dogs chasing my boys. But since I didn't hear thundering hooves, I went back to sleep ....
....but not for long. I felt that something wasn't right so I went onto my bedroom balcony and looked down towards the paddocks (yes I am spoilt ). I saw a dark shape in the moonlight in my arena and for a ghastly moment thought it was Dr Evil - but he seemed to have very long ears, not at all shettie ears. And there were more shapes .....
I raced out and found four donkeys wandering across my land, obviously on a mission - I didn't know the blighters could move so fast or cover so much ground without seeming to hurry. Of course they then turned onto the lane and disappeared.
I heard the hunting dogs (we call them the Bin Dogs as they are chained to and live in wheelie-bins. Honestly ) ) start to bay so I knew where the donks were heading but I lost them as I went for my car.
So then I started driving around looking for them and eventually met a farmer driving them before his tractor along the lane (but not because he wanted to) but the beggars disappeared again. A quick chat with the farmer did nothing to enlighten me as to their owner but I did make him call the gendarmes.
A neighbour of mine has donkeys but I initially discounted them as I couldn't see how the animals had been able to cross the irrigation canal between our properties. Eventually it was a decent hour (6am) so I decided to knock them up anyway and blow me, they WERE their donkeys.
Then we were joined by the gendarmes AND the civil protection brigade and we all set off looking for them.
Long story short: we found them, they allowed themselves to be caught through a mixture of exhaustion and bellyache they had been stuffing their faces in a luzerne field and had the runs to prove it..... and they are now safely back home.
So I've been up since 4am, frantic about Paco's back wound, dunno how many times I've treated it today and still have to pack for my trip to the Ardeche .....
Bloomin' donkeys.
