Had a fantastic flatwork lesson on monday. Got the fella out who i got last year, hes a brilliant coach, always so positive but always makes me feel like im pushing myself, you always feel on a high after a lesson with him. First lesson since bringing back into work - every time i get G out he asks me have i been XC with murphy, he is XC on the brain (he coaches eventing), had to laugh - we havent jumped a stick yet! Anyway, was telling him that ive entered for a dressage competition on sunday - fed up of forest rides, time to crack on with the competing! But i never thought to bring the test to go through it - not to worry, as its just prelim, we just went through all the movements that we thought might come up. I had thought murphys schooling had gone to pot a bit after his break as he wasnt halting as square and he was wobbling on his straight lines, when normally he is on train tracks and he halts perfectly square (he is well trained!!).
I was very pleasantly surprised that he just seemed to need a refresher as he really improved as we went through the different bits and pieces - it was great having G there on the ground to help. Murphy enjoyed using his brain i think, he is a very very clever pony who gets bored easily and then just goes round sleeping! Anyway, he is so much better in the school, hes never been as good in all the time ive been riding him, no more pony club kicks and using the stick - he just goes when you tell him and has much more 'sparkle'! In fact he had so much sparkle, he actually took off on me when we were going down the centre line - a bird must have flew up or something - and all i could think was that i was supposed to be halting - nearly ran over G but we managed to get stopped at the bottom - i think hes only took off on me once before in the arena last winter but that is definitely not something murphy does!!!
We worked on transitions to get him more responsive as G was saying that he has a slight delayed response and when we got it it felt so light and easy! Got some great tips about riding a dressage test and started to feel like we had it in us to win the damn thing! I was just going to go and do it and whatever happened happened but G said hes going brilliant and he reckons i should be getting 8s for stuff! He says hes looking the best hes ever seen him! We didnt worry about outline, G said he wanted to get him going forward and going 'on the ball' first.
So i will maybe get another lesson in a few weeks and see how we go! Dressage report to follow on sunday!
