I know that some of you don't worm regularly but prefer to rely on worm counts, but that's not available to me so I worm twice a year and rely on a combination of hot, dry weather, the chickens and some poo picking to keep things in order. I never see worms in their poo.
But my friend's horse has suddenly become very ill with what looks like an attack of small strongyles, even though she wormed him in the autumn. It's made me review my regime.
I last wormed just before Xmas, late because I was particularly concerned by the number of bot eggs I was finding and I had to wait for the first frost. I gave them ivermectin wormers (Eqvalan) to deal with the bots. We are now approaching the normal springtime worm but I'm wondering if I should wait?
I guess they should get a combination wormer at some point and it seems to me that I could wait until summer is here (May-ish) and then give Equest Pramox (moxidectin and praziquante).
What do you think? Any better ideas?

I count and follow the reduced use program from westgate labs (who i do my counts with) - it's part way down this sheet if link works - no sure if your seasons are quite the same as ours though? www.westgatelabs.co.uk/downloads/help-for-sqps-and-retailers-A4.pdfThey have lots of useful advice on their website including a list of what wormers contain what and what they are used for.

Im now a spring and autumn wormer Rac, Ive had a bad experience with the worm counts and we poo pick regularly. I also have a flock of starlings in residence and usually when I pull back thecurtains a thousand starlings are trawling my fields- especially if Ive done some poo kicking (which I do when its dry or a frost expected. I use the wormers that do the lot including tape worm and make sure the dosage is correct for their weight. Touch wood it seems to be doing the job. Im under the impression that as long as you alternate the main chemical then there are few resistance issues and all worms are targeted. My last one was Pramoxtoo so will be interested in what you use.

There's a lot of chatter on the web about pramox being very strong and the possibility of colic as a result. I could instead double-dose Strongid against tapeworm, although I have no reason to believe they have any burden, but you never know. Mine have had Strongid in the past so I know the rustics are OK with it.
Hmmm, research continuing.

Can you split out the chemicals in Pramox instead? I know Equest gel is only moxidectin and I think you can get another wormer with the other half, then do them a couple of weeks apart. It's a preferred approach by 'barefooters' as Pramox can make horses footy for up to a few weeks.

It's the encysted small red worms that worry me the most as they can cause colic when they emerge and are undetected on worm counts as far as I know. I generally use moxidectin / ivermectin twice a year and combined moxidectin and praziquantel (Pramox) in Spring and Autumn. I am interested though in splitting the praziquantel and giving it on it's own though.

I know this is an old thread but the subject is still relevant ....
I wormed them in the autumn with Eqvalan Duo (ivermectin and praziquantel for tapeworm) and am ordering Equest (moxidectin to target encysted worms) now.
Any thoughts?

I used double dose strongid in autumn and just considering what to use for spring too. Equest seems reasonable but interested in thoughts also.

Not been very good about worming since barefoot! Lots of horror stories about moxodectin causing lami. So been using equest twice yearly. Equi tape once and the odd worm count which always come back zero. Not the best role model!

But that's good news Sol! Equest IS moxidectin so if you've had no problems with it I am reassured.

Shows how much I know! The one to avoid I am told is the equest Pramox.

Shows how much I know! The one to avoid I am told is the equest Pramox. There are anecdotal links between EP and colic but nothing proven. Do the barefooters not like it? And this might be a silly question: why have you you 'not been very good' about worming since P went barefoot - are there fears about the chemicals? I like to know all the possible pitfalls as I take extreme care with Sam.

Not a silly question. Yes it's the risk of lami/colic that worries me most. Whe I was at yards I always complied with worming programs. Where I am now the YO is very relaxed about it. She gives herbal preventative stuff. Who knows if that does any good? I have wormed Pete once since being there and had two worm counts done. So I guess I am feeling slack because he was always done more before. Reality is he is probably in a better routine now. No strange horses coming and going. Poo picking done every day.

I'm bad with worming too but i do poo pick daily also. Last year i only did one lot of thingys and just wormed for tape worm (the test is more expensive than the wormers!) and then did the paramox after the first frost. incidently i was worried as murph had a mild colic a week or so before i wormed him but he was fine x I sort of follow this.

Had to delay worming for a few days as Sam had a complet and we always worm during time off. I did the lot of them with Equest and am happy to report no side effects.
