So I got to thinking that we need a fifty shades of grey comparison and advice for all our grey, white or yellow horses. Harriet is generally clean but to my horror has a very yellow tail, Ive used sheep whitener on it and sun- in and last year managed to get it looking ok but she has chestnut hairs in her tail (how unfortunate is that?) so she is always going to have a pissy looking tail. But here are the recommendations Ive had for gleaming results Use blue rinse products for silver hair. Orvus- a carpet shampoo that is gentle and pure- but very very expensive- seems to be the choice of show experts. Asda blue bubble bath- this actually works quite well. Sheep shampoo- this also works well but is dearer then Asda but not as dear as Orvus. Bleach- yes general household thin bleach- watered down and sprayed in daily- ok as long as there is no wind about as you end up with whiter than white patches elsewhere and watch eyes! But a lot cheaper than Sun in which is basically the same thing only with perfume. Chamomile- used as a rinse to bring the sparkly bits out- not used yet- any experience out there? Lemon juice- also not used yet? ??

I always swear Paco is self cleaning but his tail can get a bit dingy. I rarely wash it - I am the laziest horse owner, I know! -but if I do I just use some washing up liquid, seems to do the trick.

I washed Indio's tail with washing up liquid two years ago (or was it three?). I think that's the only time his tail has ever been washed! It didn't help unfortunately as it stayed stubbornly yellow so I think I need to set aside a good bit of time to get it sparkling

Lol i'll fight you for laziest owner title, i've washed Harry's mane and tail probably less times than the years i've owned him! His mane self cleans in the rain and his tail does come clean if washed but he prefers the 'au natural' look anyway...he always tries to slink off when you go near him with any sort of brush, let alone water! A grey just wouldn't be for me i'm afraid.

I just wash with grey horse shampoo when i need to, sometimes takes a couple of rinse and repeats but normally turns out ok. Have tried the silver shampoo it was ok but didnt find it any better than the grey horse shampoo. As he lives out i just accept its going to get dirty so only attempt to clean it when im going somewhere! I havent even brushed it since december lol! no point if we are just going round the roads and hes going back out to the field!
