A woman I know quite well but would not describe as a close mate has just bought a new horse and asked me is she could hire my trailer. I confess I hesitated. I love that trailer, I keep it pretty tidy and I depend on it. But I said yes, she can borrow it tomorrow since I am using it Wednesday to go to XC training. Her OH is our car mechanic so can't imagine any technical problems but, well, the French drive like maniacs. Still, she's a nice lady and I must not be OCD about my stuff. I will breathe ......

I can totally relate to this rac as currently going through a similar experience! Last weekend my cousin asked if they could borrow my trailer to practice loading and i agreed as im not using it. Got a message a few days later to say that it was parked in the field so pony could go in and out and get used to it so i started worrying about it being exposed to the elements it being a wooden box. And then dad got me all wound up saying that the roof was going to blow off it and the sides would rot and fall out and the ramp would get warped if it wasnt parked level and the pony tramped on it. As you can see he likes to exaggerate and im a worrier anyway so you can imagine what i was thinking and feeling lol! So then dad suggested that i sell the box on to them (there isnt anything wrong with it and i hadnt planned on selling it, although with it being wooden, i thought about the potential for future repairs) and i could put the money towards a newer one. Anyway after a few days i asked them if they could close it up as i was worried about it getting rotted so they said they would and i felt better! I approached them about buying it and they are keen to do so, so i may have my box sold by the end of the week if all goes well and can start window shopping for a new one (hoping that M gets better so i can actually use it lol)

Eek, that is scary.
I'm currently borrowing another livery's trailer for two weeks and I got 'trailer hire insurance' from E&L for it - it was only 12 pounds. Could you see if there is something similar in France?
FB - it may also be worth considering for your cousin if they decide not to buy it!

Interesting never knew you could get that. Although probably wouldnt have thought of it as it wasnt an 'official borrow' for a certain time period and its family thats got it. I havent even got it insured for myself! lol it just sits in the yard with a brick at the wheel! im not very security conscious

loaning out precious equipment is always a worry. I let my pony loanee use my horsebox and Im disappointed to say lots of little niggly things happened- like the door lining coming away (okay it fitted back but I didnt cause it to happen) and the chem loo which had never been used left with pee in it. And a suspicious scratch on the rear bumper. I started to resent it getting used which is awful and I ended up having to completely clean it out when it came to selling it when I had used it the least- so be very very careful. Saying that Im not normally precious about stuff but people can and do take advantage.

Well I can breathe again! It is back safe and sound, washed out and spotless and she gave me 50€! (Which I took!) Phew, won't be doing it on a regular basis though.
Flea, if I were you I'd sell on your wooden trailer and get a more modern one, as you are thinking. There is a lot of upkeep in wood and they are heavy. Mine is a Cheval Liberté, which some Ifor fans sneer at, but I love it: it's lightweight, the independent Pulman suspension is brilliant for the horses' comfort and you barely know it's there when you are towing. I find the Ifors too heavy and clunky as I'm generally on my own.

the cheval liberte sounds good! dont see many of them advertised over here, the majority around are ifor williams (which is what ive got) was speaking to a dealer last week to check out prices for repairs and to price a newer one and he says the market is quiet at the minute, he didnt have anything in that i was looking for ideally i would like something with an aluminium floor, been looked after and budget 2000 to 2500. thats good to hear that theres people out there that have respect and gratitude when using other peoples stuff!
