So at the moment Im doing the bit I love the best- starting from scratch(almost). Im treating both mares the same, as if they have done very little (obviously Harriet is the known quantity but a 6/7 month layoff after only seven weeks work means she is very very green again) the first time back on Harriet was a bit worrying- she was tricky to get to the mounting block but once there let me mount ok, but then it was like she was first backed- and she just went backwards, slowly but perhaps 10m or so. Then she realised what I was asking and went forwards, but she felt mouthy and hard as a plank. I didnt do much, a few walk cicles and then a couple of trot circles- right being much better than left...and then finished- but it felt great to be back on and I had to pinch myself a little as at one point it had looked bleak!Yesterday she was fab- started to give more on the left rein and was very obedient in her serpentines. Her mouth feels different though and I may need another bit- cant decide what yet, thinking something very plain and light.
Floss continues to impress but mounting is very very tricky- she stands quiet enough when she gives in but getting her to the point where I can put my foot in the stirrup is a task of monumental patience. But yesterday once she had got over her initial spookiness she gave me some lovely trot- there certainly is a tiger in the tank as once that trot starts to go it roars!
They both turn out well together also which is a real bonus. I tend to turn the mares out for half a session and then Basil and Toudle. All four out together is way too tricky as Harriet has become very protective of Floss.
Enjoying my horses at the moment!
