I asked this question last year but due to the soggy weather recently ive been starting to think more about waterproofs when i bring murphy back into work. Have thought that perhaps a long riding coat would be a better idea than waterproof trousers as i would imagine you would feel like Michelin man and feel a bit restrictive/bulky? If theres no lining would they not make your jodhpurs quite damp if they got wet? I find that with raincoats that dont have any lining (mac in a sac). I had bought waterproof chaps last year but returned them after trying them on as i didnt really like them much, too tight and bulky i think, think they were possibly shires ones. Theres an offer on at a local tack shop for the jack murphy malvern coat - anyone rate this? www.holmesteadsaddlery.com/product.php?id=1241&catid=63¤cy=gbp

I've got that style of coat and love it. I think mine's an Aigle, it is waterproofed nylon and packs up into a small bag that I can attach to my rando saddle, but is totally rainproof. Two things to look out for: make sure it's got straps to hold the coat down snugly over the thighs, and that it has flaps over the pockets or they could fill with water. I bought a man's version because they have longer arms - I can't bear the sleeves to ride up and my wrists get wet.
I used to have a Drizabone but threw it out eventually: much too heavy and difficult to keep proofed.

thats a good point rac, that its not too heavy, youd feel like you couldnt move when riding! I see that the jack murphy one has the leg straps but photo isnt clear enough to show the pockets. Will have to get a run over to take a look at it sometime soon. I suppose you just dont know till you try it on!

I think that's the coat I have (it's definitely a Jack Murphy one). I've not tried it 'in anger' over here yet but it kept me dry through Hong Kong rainstorms, which are worse than most that I've seen in the UK! It felt like it might be flappy when I first put it on but I didn't notice it once on board, and I was always schooling in an arena which is when flapping would normally bother me more. If it keeps raining this week I'll get it out again and let you know how it goes

I have a lovely very waterproof but quite bulky mountain horse coat. It's the one with the body armour? Live it so warm and dry.

Thanks for suggestions! Going to a couple of sales this weekend hopefully and will see what options are on offer!
Sol i think ive seen that coat with the built in body protector, think id probably still prefer my body protector under a coat although its a good enough idea that mountain horse had!

I have a Jack Murphy long riding coat which is OK but I've never ridden in it! I have the Rambo full chaps and I love them. Mine are the "summer" ones without the fleece lining and they still keep my legs warm and dry depite their age or that they've been washed numerous times.
