Basil, Harriet and Toudle are all getting gammy eyes at the moment, its the flies and despite eye masks they still keep flaring up. Im keeping on top of it but one of Harriets gave me cause for concern, it was weeping so I cleaned it up (Im really careful in using one pad for one wipe etc, and use either milk or saline to do it) but in the morning her eye was really sore and swollen. This was despite wearing a mask etc. I was surprised it had come up so quickly and realised it probably needed the vet. I went to boots and got some eye wash for irritated eyes and also some drops and used these as a last measure before the vet, knowing I would probably need to call him today, but happily she is much better, the wash seems to have worked wonders and she was really good about letting me put the drops in. most of the redness is now gone. Has anyone else used this?

Never thought of using eye drops...guess it's one of those really obvious "duhhh" moments - like my thrush: Milton + antibacterial no-water hand wash - treatment. Really glad she's feeling better . We tend to use cool tea bags to soothe sore eyes. Not entirely sure how it works but it certainly seems to help.

Yup, Dr Evil had very sore eyes recently -despite his mask too - so I went to the pharmacy and the nice lady gave me a 'human' antiseptic cream for about 3€. Cleared him up in two days. Talking of flies - I get very annoyed down here as the shops only sell what they think is appropriate for the season. So we are in autumn and it is almost impossible to get anti fly products, despite the hot and sticky weather and unbearable clouds of flies everywhere. I found some Emouchine roll-ons recently and bought the lot. But new fly masks? Not on your life! So we're managing with disintegrating ones humph humph

Our pharmacists can be tricky, Ive had a stand off with one in the past when I wanted hydrogen peroxide. I think she thought I was Al Queada! Most fly masks are onsale over here now Rac- so good time to get some bargains- or I can keep an 'eye' out for you and bring some across?

That's very kind Brig - I'll keep an eye out online but TBH haven't found anything suitable, or in the right sizes. The Decathlon ones have served me well so far. Sam is tricky as his head is finer than the rustics and he has such small ears, compared with the hot-weather horses, that he looks like a clown in his mask: the ear pieces flop over! But I can't see the point of NOT having the ears covered - the moucherons are disgusting and drive the boys crazy if they are not masked up.

I will give that a try in future, Harry seems to have had a gammy eye each year for last few resulting in vets visits bar this time. I didn't call the vet immediately this year and it was much better next day with just bathing in boiled water (cooled obviously lol). Definatly a good tip.
