Entered a 2 phase competition last sunday as it was at my riding clubs venue and 20mins up the road, plus ive already jumped most of the fences on the course so i thought why not?!
Felt a bit rushed in the showjumping as i had only just came into the warm up arena and they were calling asking if i was nearly ready! Stuck to my guns because they were calling me 15-20 mins before my time! Got in a good warm up and headed on in. The course was 8 fences and a nice simple flowing track. However, the class was described as 'fences not exceeding 80cm' so the jumps all varied slightly in size and width. Bit disappointed with the terrible riding in the showjumping as i was on the wrong leg a lot of the time, then no 7 he took off early and then i knew he was going to come into no 8 on a bad stride, sure enough he was too far off the jump - i was too wussy to kick him on over it as it was full up and must have been saving my brave pants for the xc - i was hesitating and he just thought 'nah' if shes not gonna do this then im not! so he slid to a stop. could have kicked myself for being so wussy but turned him round and rode back round and popped it not a problem.
XC was the best we've ever done i think. He was foot perfect - at my first xc competition he napped at the start box and i had some bullying to do to get him going but on sunday there was only a little hesitation walking down from the collecting area and he just sailed through the start box! I was a little worried we might not have any brakes as hes been a little strong the past few times ive been there schooling but he was really good - much better than my first comp. The course was rather twisty for the most part - 33 fences long! and used nearly every jump in the place! I even managed to pull him up to trot through parts of it - one v steep hill which i was NOT going to canter down and a wet ditch you had to ride along etc, plus he steered brilliantly and turned when i asked and was just generally brilliant. The last part of the course was just a long straight line along the edge of a couple of fields and he really went for it, he was fab. The first competition i did was a little twisty at the start but then there was long cantering stretches between jumps whereas this was a lot more twisty and just one jump after another. I had very little brakes in my first comp but much better this time, although i did put in a single jointed gag but only had the reins on the snaffle ring so slightly more brakes perhaps!
He powered through the finish line and recovered really well, he was just super!
Didnt get placed - got time faults and then the stop in the SJ but had a great day and we got round it which is a great achievement!
