Things have changed since i got my old dogs: now in France all 'domestic carnivores' - cast and dogs mostly, although many would say that dogs are omnivores not carnivores - have to be micro-chipped and registered on a central list. What a good idea! Just been doing Haddock's paperwork. Strikes me as a brilliant way to keep tracks of pets and to encourage responsible ownership (but of course here are those that can't be @rsed ) What's the system in the UK?

There is no system! I think all dogs should be passported and registered but it will never happen. The horse passport system is a fiasco most of the time. The National Equine Data Base which did have a register of all equine PP's was closed down a couple of years ago but I think I read something recently that maybe something is taking it's place. Not sure what, if anything, can ever improve animal welfare and owner responsibility.

There is a law coming in saying all dogs must now be microchipped. Not sure about cats, but I know Dogs Trust are offering free microchipping vouchers at most vets to encourage owners to get chipping.
I think it's a great idea.
Just wish they would get more organised re:horses!!!

We are a nation of animal lovers, yet our practices regarding the monitoring of animals is shocking. Good on the French for doing this- I hope it has some impact.

I watch all the 'RSPCA' (UK) and SPCA (USA) programmes, which make me very sad. But caring owners always get their dogs microchipped. If by any chance they lose their pet, at least it can be identified and hopefully returned to them. Also one can get away without having to have one of those stupid 'jangly' dog discs on the collar which drive you nuts!!
Just my opinion, sadly I don't have a dog, but love them all the same.
