Hi, As you know I am a bit... knee deep in misery. But I have some... GOOD NEWS !!!
At some time this year I might be getting a horse!! So far I've found a lovely showing mare who is 7 and has competed quite a bit. She's a lovely flea-bitten grey and is a lovely ride. Next week I have her on loan for a month. This may sound mad but I want her to wipe the smirks off the girls at my yard with her. I know it sounds... yeah. But I kinda have a small falling out with them... MORE LIKE THIS SIZE
Yeah. But its still exciting. Especially since Dot is getting old and Jam is 13. So I guess...
Oh and the mare isn't definite. So if someone could give me any tips on what to look for in a good showing horse/pony, that'd be great!! Thanks, Lauraaaa

Haven't been keeping up with your posts so sorry if I'm asking silly questions!
Have you already got Jamaica on loan? I think its not the best idea to get another horse just to make some girls jealous. Its perfectly possible to turn any horse out to show standard and a bit of hard work with schooling and in lessons will have Jamaica transformed. Far better to quietly get on with your own riding and show them how good you and your pony can be!
It will be good experience to have this mare on loan for a month anyway.
If you want to get into showing properly it depends on the type of class you want to do as to the type of pony to get. E.g show pony, show hunter pony, mountain and moorland etc all show classes are about showcasing the highest quality animals in terms of conformation and type and performance etc.
Showing can be very hard to break into and takes a good few years of hard work going to shows and building up experience and contacts.
I would advise going to local shows to start with, joining pony club or riding club, getting experience under your belt, testing the water in different classes and disciplines to see how you get on!

That's okay! Don't worry. Jamaica is my own horse. And I know I shouldn't want to make them jealous. I do take lessons and Jamaica, I have to say, he is a bit lazy. I do try to keep him awake but he's one of those ponies who falls asleep in lessons. zzz... He prefers hacking and jumping. I have spoken to the mare's owners and they say, too, that'll it'll be a good experience for me. When I was younger, I took my little pony (it was a shetland) to a in hand class. You should've seen us. He was trotting along perfectly and then got spooked and pulled me halfway across the arena. I like in hand and Hunter classes. I understand about the many years it takes as I spoke to the mares owner and I remember speaking to Dot to Dot's owners. Previously, I'd taken Jamaica to a few shows (showing!) but we both lost interest. Jamaica just fell asleep and I hated the getting all dressed up and having to go shopping. Blah, blah. But that was when I was about 7 and I got bored easily.

I know how you feel with a lazy pony as i have a pony on loan and the only thing he really gets excited about is cross country lol! Feel like im always on at him all the time! I know what you mean about getting dressed up etc. i go through phases of really enjoying getting all dressed up and then phases where i cant be bothered with all the faffing about lol! It sounds like this mare could be the perfect thing to get you more experience as i know its hard to progress when the pony isnt that interested! I think its just a matter of getting out there and trial and error! Good luck with it anyway, i think its a really good thing that you are getting to try this horse for a month, its a great opportunity and hopefully you will get on really well with her! This is quite a good website describing showing classes etc : www.theshowring.info/index.html

Jam is no age at all at 13 - my ponies 15 now (can't quite believe where that time has gone!) and we're only really just starting getting out and about. Have you any pics of the mare? We could maybe direct you in the right direction for classes of her type.
