Looking for some tips please. Magic has been putting his head through a wooden fence to get a blade or two of grass and has rubbed a chunk out of his mane. He's not cut and it's not tender to touch but it's awful looking. What can I do to help it grow back and prevent it from happening again?

I feel for you DB, Harriet had a glorious mane but she has a habit of sloughing her neck to the side of the stable door when I feed or hay up- despite her being done first, so she has now a big gap of baby fluff, its now long enough to plait so Ive shortened the rest to match up but its a shame as I wanted her au natrel (sp?) so thats the solution- match the rest up. Re fencing- the new paddock Ive got has only two rails at the top- its next to the lawn so the idea being the horse can get its nose under enough to trim a strip- then when the mower does the lawn no strimming required near the rail- it seems to work and also prevents the rubbing thing so is it worth considering removing the bottom rail?

Eddie is suffering the 'section of crew cut' mane also from her full neck turnout rug over winter. It looks awful and I can do nothing with it! I have heard good stuff about something called megatek hair rebuilder - though also some views that say its done nothing and even caused hair to fall out!! Prevention, could you put a line of leccy tape under the rail to stop head going under.

could you long term put some netting along it so they can't stick their heads through. Short term i think you'll have to be honest and explain whats happened if it's questioned, unless its bald/rubbed all the way plus the tail i doubt anyone would be suspicious of sweet itch.

I hope so Haffy - I don't think it looks like sweet itch - it's just the mane
