The teenager needs a new skull cap for XC comps, so it must conform to all the regs. My bete noir is inadequate strapping so I like the ones most jockeys wear with fat straps that go around the ears. Other than that, any suggestions? She is quite keen on Champion - any thoughts?

I like champion, reasonably priced and one of the top for safety. I find they come nicely down on your head and have ordinary straps which are just fine. Think there's a hsi one they're supposed to be v good but dear I think. I'm becoming a hat collector, I've got my old skull cap which could do with updating, my old velvet one which is still in fairly good nick, then my vent air everyday one which I regretted buying as it doesn't come down that far on my head but I'm getting the use out of it anyway, bought one off Gumtree new for 30 quid with flesh straps for shows but its a bit squeezy on the head so I hardly wear it. I think they are all champion hats actually

I have a charles owen that has served me well over the years. It's lightweight so you don't really know that you have it on and for the price they are they are really good quality compared to some of the more expensive brands. www.rideaway.co.uk/charles-owen-ultralite-euroMine was yellow tagged when I was a fence judge at a BE event so it does conform to all the safety regulations. It would be something to double check though as the rules might be different in France to the UK. I'm another hat collector, I have my skully, my show hat and various others in the shed thatr are no use to man nor beast that I can't seem to get rid of.

Champion don't fit me, they suit people with round heads... I put one on and it's too tight front to back and very wide at the sides, but they seem very popular so I could just be weird!
I have a £40 Dublin onyx, have hunter trailed etc in it and it seems to conform to the criteria.
