Took on some ex intensive hens today, not sure if they have 'battery' hens here now but they are still intensively farmed so the poor things look a bit ragged- but they can fly like flipping eagles! One was so sure she could exscape the new coop she flew straight into the duckpond! Cue lots of flapping and me having to get seriously splashed rescuing her. She then sat hunched up shivering (I didnt kknow hens shivered!) so I put her inside on some shaving to warm up and dry out. Hopefully she will be ok. We have now cut their flight feathers whilst they get used to us. We dont mind our chicks roaming a bit but these need to feel at home first.

Interesting Brig. My hens can't really fly, they just flap and run a few feet off the ground But my bantams were demon flyers - the first night they arrived they escaped from the henhouse and flew up to the tops of the spindliest pine trees, pretty clever and safe actually. But I wanted them down so got he OH to go up a ladder - just as he reached for the first one (tree and ladder swaying perilously) the beggar flew off...
