So, vet rang, got results back for Gem and Eddie today - Gem - its a melanoma definately. got to keep an eye on it, take pics etc and if she starts dropping weight rapidly, well ... theres nothing they can do. the lump will be pressing on her glands, trachea and oesophagus. theres no chance of an operation either, so am now looking around for any medication i can give her to help stop that. Eddie - xrays still show nothing. hes down to 1 bute a day from today, for a week. If hes no better hes off to Oakham for further investigations. So, can any of you guys recommend anything i can feed my poor lil pony to help with the melanoma?

You poor thing! Like Becca I didn't realise that Gem was poorly. WHere is the melanoma? Is it affecting her breathing? Don't know what you could feed but suppose there are supplements and vitimins that can help. I think Grays are more prone to melanomas like fair skinned people? Really hope things work out but have no knowledge of this myself so can say nothing helpful. With Eddie, perhaps its good news nothing showed on xray? Perhaps he needs a bit of physio?
ANyway, you are having your share of bad luck!! You poor thing - hope you have better news soon x

Aimee, looks like quite a good product. Wonder if we can get it in the UK without prescription...
Ive spoken to my dad, need to speak to my mum, but on monday im going to be ringing the vet, asking for their opinion on a drug called Cimetidine. I know its available in this country, as a gastric ulcer drug, but known to help reduce size of melanomas. Its prescription only, hence my question.
Ive taken some pics of Gems melanomas, will be measuring as of tomorrow too so will upload them for you Aimee.
Becca and Duckles - The lump concerned is on the right side in her jowl area. Right near her glands. She also has one on the left side of her head, above her eye socket, and a few tiny ones on her dock.
In horses, melanomas are benign tumour which can remain 'dormant' ie not growing, for years but some can change rapidly - when they start to cause problems.

Not to massage full stop or just massage around the area? - I was considering getting a physio/chiro out to my guys, would that spread it??

maybe we should decide not to sell him now, although then again, i think were going to have to claim for the 2 lots of xrays etc already depending on price, so might be easier to tell him we want him gone asap! ;D

i did a week course in horse massage and we were told never do it as it speed's up the circulatory system and it makes them spread and grown faster tbh id ask Ur vet and see what they say I'm not a qualified equine body worker just did a basic one so i could do roo

Im planning on speaking to him on monday, its the next chance ive got. Also need to get the farrier out (vet trimmed one hoof and not the other 3 for xrays, so Eds wonky!) but i will ask my vet as im wanting to know about Cimetidine anyway (see if its a viable treatment for them for Gem, given her age etc) and whether its legal under FEI rules (not that im overly fussed, it wont overly restrict me, if they start doing blood testing at prelim/novice level dressage then im in deep doodoo anyway im sure given some of the stuff shes been given) as none of the websites seem to say either way.

If you see my last pic post - 'smelly and her lumps' - you can see where the lump is.
The vet reckons theres no way she'd make it thru the op given where it is.

Thanks ;D It wasnt there when we bought her, its come up in the last 2 years. First noticed it last august, so we had the vet out to make sure it wasnt anything sinister which college could be funny about, and he said it was just a 'grass lump' on her gland and hes meant to be one of the more senior vets at the practice!!! (Dont worry, theyre not all as bad!)

Biomedical Research Laboratories of Takara Shuzo (CEO Hisashi Omiya) and Research Institute for Glycotechnology Advancement, a company funded by the Bio-oriented Technology Research Institute (CEO: Kazue Fukushi), have discovered that a polysaccharide known as Fucoidan, which is found in kombu and other types of brown seaweed (wakame, mozuku, and hijiki), causes various types of established cancer cell lines to self-destruct.

I have read that back pain can show up as lameness. I can't remeber which mag i read it in. N my Dad went to the doctors the other day and he limps and she said she thought he had back pain. Dunno if its worth lookin into.
Hope they feel better soon.
