Flies

Murph hates summer, he is plagued by flies seemingly regardless of anything i'm able to do and this week is already skulking in the shelter for the vast majority of the day.
Has anyone found any products/tips that work for them? Also in regards fly rugs, he gets too hot as the weather warms up, currently he has a Mark Todd one with neck and a belly cover.

the manitoba fly trap that rac threaded about is supposed to be really effective- seems easy enough to make with a bit of thought

This is the one I like to use. www.barrier-biotech.com/product.php?pid=SPI was watching a horse fly trying to land on rose yesterday it gave up in the end. I also use net tex summer fly cream which is a bit greasy but as Rose wont where a fly mask is good down her ears.

Yup, the manitoba trap really does work against tabanids but it's best if you put it out now so you can catch them before they establish a breeding cycle. So far my DIY attempts have been abject failures so I'm gonna just flaming buy one. My mate has one and it's horrific how it fills up with the b•stards. And then they die mwahah mahwaha ..... For the little flies that we call moucherons there really isn't a permanant solution. I found Flymax to be effective but it's expensive so I stick with my tea/citronella/vinegar/lavender oil concoction, but you do have to apply it often.

Thanks i'll have to give both of those a try, good to hear a fly spray actually appears to work too!
I've just ordered him a premier equine fly rug with the refund from Harry's fence rug as i'm hoping it will be a slightly better fit than the Mark Toddd on him.

I got a Weatherbeeta fly rug with belly piece for Sam and it's lovely but there is one fatal flaw - the tabanids are vertical risers so if they get caught underneath it they cannot escape. It's horrific when I pat his back and feel a bunch of crunchy flies in there just feeding endlessly ...om nom nom ...... hate the beggars
