Having been a year since my last dressage test, decided it was about time to put our schooling work to the test so entered Eddie into a walk trot test at the local riding club. I like these tests as you can use any tack. I've only done two tests previously with Ed and both times was marked down for her being against the hand. Arrived today in plenty of time (for a change!) so was able to do a good warm up and really get Ed listening to me. She did a lovely test and our transitions were spot on (though unfortunately I over prepared slightly and we lost a few marks for them being too early). Our highest score previously was 63% (and that was very generous) so imagine how thrilled I was to come away in second place with 69.5%. Finally our work is paying off. Not stopped grinning yet. Next step needs to be to find a dressage legal bit which Ed likes so we can get out to some different venues. Oh and not a single 'against the hand' comment

Well done - that sounds like great progress!! What bit is she currently in? Maybe someone on here can suggest the best dressage-legal equivalent.

Scats well done.
I really like the neue schule verbidend for dressage but not if she may decide to do a runner! It is sweet in their mouths and the blurb says it helps lift the shoulder, but I actually think it just sits so comfortably and is quite thin (but not severe hence the runner remark) the horse isnt inclined to lean on it.

Pboy she's currently in a rubber mullen mouth pelham. Me and instructor are going to have a play around with some different bits so any suggestions welcome. Brig I will have a look at those. The problem I have found previously is that she seems to prefer a straight bar which really limits us. Though I've not tried a shaped mouthpiece like that before so she may be more accepting of it. For schooling she's not likely to take off *one hopes!* (though can be strong hence the against the hand comments usually) and I will just stick to the pelham whilst hacking - tried and tested and the safest option!! I'm hoping that as her schooling has improved and she's far more accepting of the hand in the first place she may naturally work better even in a jointed mouthpiece. We need to find something as yard is joining in with Team Quest - www.britishdressage.co.uk/competitions/team_quest and we want to be part of it! Off to the Bit Bank....

Well done Scats!!!!
I get so annoyed about rules and regulations at comps: Paco's Dr Cooks is not legal for anything (although judges sometimes turn a blind eye) although a hackamore is legal for some things. Sam's boots are banned for dressage ..... harumph

Scats I simply hate Pelhams, eventually the horse becomes numb in the hand, I think they just have too many issues to be viable long term bits. I tried a hanging straight bar on basil once, he hated it, but he does have a huge tongue! If you measure her mouth and it fits you are welcome to try/ borrow it for postage, pm with size

Well done that's really good scatty! Have heard of people just popping in a snaffle for a day or two up to the comp and then going back to usual bit.

I used to do that with Figaro compete him is dressage in the happy moth straight bar snaffle then pop him back into his dutch gag for every day life - otherwise I simply had no brakes
I probably have one lurking around the tack room too if you let me know what size you need I can measure it
