I am jumping bonkers at the moment. Jamaica is such a naughty pony at the moment! He keeps on refusing when I get to a jump. And yes, I have got the vet and dentist round and everything is fine. So. He is just plain naughty!! We've got a SJ comp this February (21st) and if he keeps acting like this, we'll get NOWHERE!!!! Anyway, bye. Your one and only, Horse Mad .

Do you have an instructor to help you, perhaps something has changed that you haven't noticed? I'd go back to pole work and build up from there to a grid to work on Jamaica's confidence (helps if you have someone on the ground to change the jumps). Could anything have happened to worry him (or you)?

Thanks, I'll try. And yes I do have an instructor but I'll only be able to get her next week and on the Sunday before the comp. Thanks

Its so annoying when they suddenly start to refuse and you are not sure what is causing it, like Pboy says, start basic again and build up, get your confidence going!

Have you loose jumped him to see if he does it when he's on his own? The other thing is have either of you had bad experiences jumping recently? If he has lost his confidence a little it could explain his behaviourn and vice versa as well. If you don't feel comfortable jumping neither will he. Horses tend to not want to do things for two reasons - pain (which you have ruled out) or fear. And sometimes out of testing people, I know my young gelding is still trying to work me out. Good luck with your competition

hmm... Maybe. Last year (3 months to be precise) I was ill and so someone at the local livery yard said they'd do SJ with him while I got better. She came back and said that he'd spooked and they knocked down a fence. Maybe that's whats causing the fear...?

Could well be. I would take him right back to basics - pole work and cross poles to build his confidence up and then gradually make the fences bigger and more difficult. You have plenty of time before your competition to get him back on an even keel.

Could he be a bit stale? Have you been doing a lot of jumping? It's all too easy to concentrate on the things we like doing and forget that the horse may not feel the same way. I would take a break for a while. Work on flat work and poles. Have fun and then introduce the odd cross pole and see how you get on. What sort of heights are you jumping?
