Sorry not been on for a while, just the whole Christmas thing...
But I did take Brave to his first dressage comp in 5 months, it was at the local Riding Club, which he had been to once before and is located between a scary main road and a public path. it was also a fancy dress competition too so LOADS to see, experience and spook at. But he behaved impeccably!
Did Novice 24 and Novice 30 the latter was heading toward Elementary territory with halts etc required in the middle of the test.
I felt we had done OK,considering I had done less than 1 week's proper schooling with him beforehand, there were bits I liked and bits I know we can do so much better, but generally I was happy with the way things went.
BUT
The boy pulled it out of the bag for me:
Novice 24 - came 4th out of 7 with a score of 68.08% Novice 30 - came 3rd out of 9 with a score of 61.54%
got a couple of 8's in both tests but mainly 6's and 7's dropped to 5's for the medium strides
main comment on both was could have done with a bit more impulsion and to show a greater difference in steps within the paces.
He does find it much easier to collect than extend, but given it was the first time out in 5 months and I really hadn't been pushing him I am over the moon. Just need to keep building his fitness and stamina which will help with the medium strides.
And he did all of this whilst wearing a Santa hat and with tinsel through his mane and tail!

He did well, and in costume too! Just remembering a theory re extension of paces, its from Anthony Crossley (if I remember correctly) that a horse can only truly extend if it can truly collect and the extension can only occur to the extent it collects, if you follow? So you need to perfect your collection first, which makes a nonsense of early dressage tests as they always ask for lengthened strides so riders usually train for lengthened strides first and miss valuable collection training.

Great results, especially after a long break and little preparation!
Ditto Brig, I've never understood why extension comes before collection in the test structure. I'm told it's because the warmblood finds extension easy due to the carriage horse blood. Maybe modern dressage would look very different if they had based it on natives, TBs and Iberians!
