Anyone used it? Dude has a wound on his neck it's a tear and is about 3X2 inches in size, the vets are saying it's going to scar but I am looking into anything which will help it heal and reduce the scaring. Any help appreciated. Xx

i'm pretty certain this is the stuff Zara used, with great results, on Aj recently. I had never heard of it before but theres pictures soemwhere of his wound before and after and it's unbelievable. I'm sure she'll spot this soon.

Haffy's right I used it on a wound on AJ's lateral aspect of his hind cannon bone. He got a nasty kick which left a big hole down to bone; it was heavily bandaged and he was kept on box rest. It was dressed with Manuka honey from day 3 and was virtually healed by week 3. There is very little scarring now. I'm a complete convert but you must buy the "medical" strength stuff. For a neck wound I think you may need some of the self adhesive dressings; there are some made for the equine market but if you can get hold of some Tegaderm with a pad then that would work a treat; it's quite expensive stuff though. Can you put some piucs on? AJ's pics are somewhere on here x

I found my original post: "Gutted" in Members only on 6th August - I'd add a link if I wasn't such a technophobe!

e-venting.co.uk/2013/04/honey/Have a read of this, the writer is totally for Manuka Honey so it is biased but it points out of lot of stuff about the stuff .

I bought 6 tubes of Activon which arrived last Friday and have been cleaning the wound and then smothering it with the honey. The field he is in is mud free and the wound is never dirty but I would like to cover it so thank you so much for your suggestions Zara I will look into the dressing you have recommended. A pic The lanky fool and Nobes (jusy because I love him) I wiil continue using it then and thanks again.

I'll try and remember to look at the special equine sticky dressings I have at the yard tomorrow. The wound looks nasty and should heal OK but that bottom flap is probably necrotic and may need debriding. Does the flap come away from the flesh? Watch for infection under that flap, flush with saline daily; can you get hold of a syringe to flush it with? personally I would want to pull the flap back up and over the wound and then loosely steri-strip it in place to give it the best chance of re-covering the wound. Do the wounds to the right connect under the skin? Is this a bite wound? is he on antibiotics?

Vets came out last monday to the smaller wound you can see above as I felt he needed antibiotics which they started him on, Tues morning I found the second wound (the pic is from then) and called them back out. It was only possibly a few hours old but they (Leahurst) said it couldn't be stitched (started to knit)and extended his coure of antibiotics and bute which is finishing tomorrow. Since then I have been cleaning with a syringe and saline also started covering with Flamazine but wanted opinions of Manuka. I will hold fire ordering dressing in case you can come up with something that hopefully will work, thanks again and I will try and get more recent pics.

Hi ernibert, the sticky horse dressings are "PolsterPlast" made by JLJ Healthcare www.petdispensary.co.uk/shop/polster_plast.html I'm not 100% sure it's still available and if not get hold of the human Tegaderm or Opsite with pad. Hope it looks better very soon x

Hi, the wound is healing but very slowly it has been 3 weeks now. Used the dressing but it seemed to attract the attention of the other horses and I found it hanging off with a bite out of it and to top it off they had demolished the neck on his rug. Oops! So I have reverted back to cleaning and applying the honey. I am pleased with the wound itself but there is a hard swelling at the bottom where the loose skin was which i am really hoping will go down in time as it will be quite obvious. Thank you and he is happy in himself.

Good to hear that he's doing well and the wound is healing; you'll just have to wait and see what happens with the lump, if it's unsightly it may need attention but hopefully it will retract xx

A good healing cream I have used for an enormous cut on debs neck was Camrosa - you can buy it online. I thought her neck would be scarred but there isn't a clue to the size of wound she had. It isn't cheap but neither is Manuka honey and is well worth the money.
