Had no idea that barefoot was so complicated .... anyhoo, just been reading up about boots again and it seems that the hoofs have to be trimmed with a mustang roll (ie a bevel on the hoof wall). Is this something you boot/barefoot bods get done when they are trimmed? Is it done as a matter of course?
In fact Sam's gammy foot is already trimmed like this at the front although I would have to have a good look at his good foot to see if it is done the same way. I'm flying blind here are boots are still very unusual in France and I might have to have a long chat with my farrier. Why is nothing simple?

My farrier does this as a matter of course Rac...i guess it depends maybe farrier to farrier but my understanding is the wall is rounded off in this way for several reasons, the main one being to get a correct beakover in the toe (this breakover is what causes the toe wear seen in hoof boots). It also helps against cracks/chips etc (and can aid recovery when these are present) as it shares the weight bearing area over the whole foot and not just the toe. I've also read lots about how it 'mechanically' can help the horse - no foot no horse as the old saying goes. I think this picture is a good example of the rolled toe and a non rolled. came from this website wildheartshoofcare.com/

My farrier does the same as Haf's - rolls the toe as a matter of course. Never really thought of questioning it until reading this thread, but, as in Haf's pic, the 'unrolled' foot looks kind of 'unfinished' to me. Again, never thought anything of the 'tidying up' R does to Faith's feet, but in a way it makes sense to neaten them up, remove any rough/sharp edges which might crack/chip, and generally make the hoof interact with the ground a little easier (think posh pointy boots versus round-ended UGGs...much easier to walk comfortably with the UGGs )

I don't think it is standard here Brig. But I'm sure F will do it if we ask.
