Sigh.
Paco is being a real beast again and trying my patience sorely. Everyone ALWAYS thinks he is a nice easy horse and he can be - but when he's in a strop he's a real pain. He's been so unhelpful and grumpy recently (and no, no physical cause before you ask!)
On Wednesday for example I had the most atrocious outing on him, even though the teenager and R were with us. It was a hunting day and there was a pack of hounds up in the woods behind us and already he was freaked. But hell's bells, he should be used to hunting dogs after five years here ...
Anyway, he was horrible: Jittery, spooky and it felt like I was riding a UXB. At one point we crossed a little road and he was ridiculous about a temporary road sign that 'appeared' behind him. He was so silly that I got off. I am not prepared to risk my life in traffic, however light.
We went on our way, with him in a banana shape this way and that as 'hazards' appeared - he even spooked at piles of dirt - so I thought he needed to get the tickle out of his toes and we went for a long uphill canter. He fought me on that too, trying to pull away.
So we schooled a bit in a flatish field but gosh guys, it was so dispiriting. By this time he was tired enough to be amenable but then he reverted to the lazy won't/shan't stuff.
Sorry peeps, bit of a whine here, n'est-ce pas?

It happens to all of us though eh? H Barney's mum was making us laugh last week saying that there are times when she has ridden her horse and really wished she'd resisted the urge and stayed on the sofa with a box of malteasers! Never alone with your horse?? Sometimes it's good to be alone- chocolate never lets you down or spooks at dirt!!

How can you not like maltesers? Hate 'em. The filling makes me shudder ..... Took the beast out on his own yesterday and the little so and so was exemplary. Even with the wind in the trees he did exactly what I asked and we even popped a log - just once as it felt so perfect I didn't think we could improve it: I was in my place, looking up at where I was going so didn't anticipate but went with him and he made a nice shape. Had some nice, sensible canters and he was listening to me. Who knows what goes on in that horse's head?
