Pete's recovering from his abscess-number four in eighteen months. He has navicular as you know and after chatting about him to some FB friends I have decided to give a hoof supplement a go. I know it's not a quick fix and it will possibly not make any other difference than making me poorer but gone for Formula 4 Feet. Anyone else know anything about it? £35 for six weeks supply. So not cheap but if it helps or even stops these ruddy abscesses it will be worth it!

My farrier swears by Equimins Hoof Mender, but just good old biotin seems to be as good as anything and years ago I was told to feed gelatin but as this is derived from meat I'm not too keen. x

I do believe t hat hoof balance is key to a healthy hoof and only when the shape is correct so that it can work properly and a period of adjustment is done that supplements be considered. I personally would give it a bit longer Sol, otherwise its money down the drain.

I can recommend Kevin Bacon Hoof Ointment (the original one, not the black one with tar in...the black one is pants!) for poor quality hooves. Generally if they dry out and chip etc - also good for helping them not get too wet and soft in the winter. Not sure if it would help to create better quality hooves but for the hoof wall and sole that is already there it can definitely help to improve it's strength and moisture content . (Faith has been having it painted on her feet for about 2 weeks now and her feet have gone from dry and easily chipped/cracked to being lovely and smooth, permanently looking like they've been smothered in Vaseline, and her soles have bounced back from being crumbly and uneven to being lovely and flat and strong We almost tried Formula 4 Feet a few years ago but was told that it was really the rest of the diet and management routine that would make Faiths feet better. We have since switched to Happy Hoof food (instead of mollichop and pasture mix...which she never needed anyway as she wasn't in any form of work back then and she was only fed it because the guy who had her before me used it for the other horses as well, but I digress). Anyway, the Happy Hoof has worked miracles for the quality of Faith's hooves and then the Kevin Bacon is just a nice extra to give her a helping hand when the weather is a bit nasty. (Can you tell I love this stuff?!)

What they like! Have you tried some molasses or black treacle till he gets used to taste?

I talked to my farrier about biotin for Sam and he wasn't very keen - another of the school that prefers good food/good trimming/balancing - and he also said that it is OK for a short fix but not long term.
